Course Description:
“Understanding Breast Cancer” is an introductory course for physical and occupational therapists, assistants and LMT who are interested in learning more about the breast cancer diagnosis, medical treatment and rehabilitation. Breast anatomy, breast cancer stages, pre and post operative medical treatments, and surgical interventions are just a few of the topics covered. The course will further define the treatable side effects and conditions that breast cancer survivors are faced with after the breast cancer is gone. This online course navigates you into the world of breast cancer so that you can gain an understanding of this special population and come closer to becoming a cancer rehabilitation expert!
Objectives
- Understand breast cancer oncology: etiology, diagnosis, types, medical treatment, surgical intervention, chemotherapy, radiation, and breast reconstruction.
- Understand the role of the PT, PTA, OT, COTA and LMT in breast cancer rehabilitation.
- Identify the conditions and diagnoses appropriate for breast cancer rehabilitation.
- Identify common side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery and understand which conditions are common and do not require immediate medical attention and which conditions require physician referral.
- Identify medical complications or side effects that require immediate medical attention.
