Identify, Assess and Treat the Physical Side Effects

This course teaches therapists to identify, assess and treat functional deficits that can result after surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments. Lymphedema, radiation fibrosis, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, post mastectomy pain syndrome, axillary web syndrome, and cancer related fatigue are just some of the conditions addressed in this course.
Conditions that will be defined and covered in the breast cancer rehabilitation courses include: radiation fibrosis, radiation induced brachial plexopathy, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, lymphedema, phantom breast syndrome, post mastectomy pain syndrome, axillary web syndrome, cervical radiculopathy, myofascial pain syndrome, rotator cuff tendonitis, adhesive capsulitis, winged scapula, nerve entrapments, chemobrain, and cancer related fatigue. We will also address general arm weakness and stiffness as well as scar tissue adhesions.
- Participants will be able to identify, assess, and treat physical conditions related to the physical and occupational therapy scope of practice that can result after medical breast cancer treatment
- Participants will be able to identify which physical conditions that result after medical breast cancer treatment are appropriate for physical and occupational therapy interventions
- Participants will be able to identify physical conditions that result after medical breast cancer treatment that require immediate medical attention and referral back to patient’s surgeon, medical oncologist or primary care physician.
- Participants will be able to perform a detailed assessment of the breast cancer patient
- Participants will be able to develop an appropriate plan of care for the breast cancer patient
- Participants will incorporate appropriate manual therapies to address physical conditions of the breast cancer patient
- Participants will identify key exercises appropriate to achieve goals of the breast cancer patient
- Participants will acknowledge special considerations that could affect treatment of the breast cancer patient population
- Identify, assess and treat the side effects from surgery, chemotherapy and radiation
- Learn the basics and be able to treat breast cancer patients upon completion of this course.

Michelle Rice, founder of “Preserva Institute”, is a physical therapist with over twenty years of experience and specializes in breast cancer rehabilitation.
She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor Degree in Human and Organizational Development and received her Master of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami School of Medicine. She has extensive knowledge in manual therapies and incorporates craniosacral therapy, myofascial release, trigger point release, soft tissue mobilization, scar release, manual lymph drainage, yoga, breath control and relaxation techniques into her treatments.
She is a certified lymphedema therapist and yoga instructor. She owns Preserva Therapy MED SPA where she also provides personalized outpatient therapy treatment to women and men on their path to recovery after cancer.

Understaning Breast Cancer Rehab – Online 7 CEUs Required for full Certification (Register to Level 2 and receive a 20% Discount on the Level 1)
NOTE: This course is geared toward enhancing the practice and knowledge of Physical and Occupational Therapists and Assistants treating breast cancer patients; parts of this course may be outside the scope of practice for Massage Therapists. It is the responsibility of all health professionals to ensure that they work within the limits of their license.
It is recommended to bring shorts and T-shirts, or sports bra/tank top, or a two piece bathing suit to each class. Bring roll-up pads, plus pillows and blankets or your own massage table if you wish, to add to your comfort.
Beginner/Intermediate
Day one:
- 8:15am: Registration
- 9am: Overview of breast cancer diagnosis, incidence, prevalence, types, stages; medical management including chemotherapy, radiation and surgical options; ALNB, lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction procedures, expanders, and implants; medical and surgical complications
- 10:45am: Break
- 11:00am: Identify and assess physical side effects and conditions possible with breast cancer: radiation fibrosis, radiation induced brachial plexopathy, chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy, post mastectomy pain syndrome, axillary web syndrome, scar adhesions, steroid induced myopathy, cancer related fatigue, carpal tunnel, shoulder dysfunction, cervical radiculopathy
- 12:30 to 1:30pm: Lunch
- 1:30pm: Identify and assess physical side effects and conditions possible after breast cancer, continued; review of assessment guide
- 3:00pm: Break
- 3:15pm: Relaxation treatment methods prior to manual treatment (sub occipital release, basic MLD, breathing, guided imagery; demo and explanation
- 3:30pm: Manual treatment options for neck and shoulder dysfunction (neck traction, joint mobilization of glenohumeral joint, scapular depression/ shoulder contract and relax method (NMRE), MFR arm pull, pectoralis TPR); demo and explanation
- 3:45pm: Manual treatment options for scar tissue, axillary cording, radiation fibrosis, chest wall tightness (Cupping, Cross Friction, Anchor/Stretch, STM, IASTM, ultrasound, MFR anterior chest wall); demo and explanation
- 4:00pm: LAB: sub occipital release, basic MLD, breathing, guided imagery, neck traction, joint mobilization of glenohumeral joint, scapular depression with shoulder contract/ relax method (NMRE), MFR arm pull, pectoralis TPR, cupping, cross friction, anchor/stretch, STM, IASTM, ultrasound, MFR anterior chest wall
- 6:00pm: end
Day 2
- 8:00am: Breast cancer related Lymphedema and assessment and measurement
- 9:00am: Treatment options (basic MLD, abdominal MLD, MLD for upper extremity, trunk MLD, ultrasound assisted STM, k taping, compression sleeves, night garments, compression wrapping)
- 10:00am: break
- 10:15am: MLD lab
- 11:15am Compression wrapping lab
- 12:15am: Kinesio taping
- 12:30pm lunch
- 1:00: Effective therapeutic exercises for the breast cancer patient
- 2:30pm: Self Care activities and patient education for the breast cancer patients
- 3:00pm break
- 3:15pm Bringing it together; Patient Questionnaire, Assessment Form, Review of diagnosis codes, sample goals, questions, survey, certificates
- At the end of your training, you will receive a current dated and signed certificate which should be displayed prominently in your office.
